Robin Toner, 1954 - 2008

Robin TonerRobin Toner, a veteran Washington reporter for the Times who covered social issues, politics and breaking news with style, passion and a devotion to detail, died this morning of colon cancer at the age of 54.

For those unfamiliar with her work, here are links to just three of her memorable pieces, done within months of each other while serving as the paper's national political correspondent, all in the Times Magazine:

"California Showdown," a vivid, insightful report on then-Mayor of San Francisco Dianne Feinstein's campaign to become governor of California, published on September 30, 1990.

"The Unfinished Politician," a prescient profile of the rising political fortunes of Senator Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, published on April 14, 1991.

"Rockefeller's Assets," a detailed look at the presidential prospects for the young West Virginia governor, an heir to a powerful political and family legacy, published on July 21, 1991.
